When we hear the word concrete, our idea is a dull-gray and industrial looking surface with no nature, personality, or character.  However, this doesn’t have to be the occasion or case with new concrete staining techniques.

Two general categories Florence KY Concrete’s stained concrete services: water-based acrylics and acid-based chemical stains. Almost all acid stains are a mixture of water, acid-soluble metallic salts, and hydrochloric acid. Our acid stains work by reacting chemically and penetrating the surface with the hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide) in the concrete. Allowing and letting the metallic salts penetrate more easily, the acid in the stain lightly etches the surface. It becomes a lasting and permanent part of the concrete and won’t fade or peel away once the stain reacts. The palette for acid-etch staining is generally limited to earthy tones, such as browns, terra cottas, tans, and soft blue-greens. If you want to go far off and beyond the subtle drama and subdued earth-toned palette of acid staining, consider our water-based stains, which come in a much broader spectrum of hues. We offer dozens of standard colors, including white and black, and even metallic tints. Like acid stains, water-based stains (typically a blend of acrylic polymers and pigments) penetrate the concrete to produce permanent color, ranging from translucent to opaque, depending on the product.

From old and new and plain or integrally colored concrete, both types of stain can be applied. For revitalizing dull, lackluster surfaces, they are especially effective.  Almost all of the stains have excellent wear resistance and UV stability because they penetrate the concrete surface. They are permitting and allowing their use on exterior or interior concrete. 

Like stains for wood, to enhance rather than disguise the surface, stained concrete is semi-transparent and is intended. They will not hide blemishes, cracks, or other flaws in existing concrete. Nor will they completely or mask an underlying color by concealing and hiding the texture of the surface.
